Troubleshooting Hang Conditions in Windows XP

A Computer May Hang During a Heavy Load with an Ericsson HIS Modem 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 319810 - If you connect to the Internet by using an Ericsson HIS modem, your computer may stop responding (hang) during a heavy load. When this occurs, you receive the following Stop code: 

An Error Message Appears with an Asus Video Adapter in Windows XP 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 309126 - When you use a computer that contains an Asus video adapter, the computer may stop responding (hang) and display the following error message: 

Computer Hangs During Shutdown or Displays a "Cannot Find Enough Free Resources" Error Message 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 314101 - You may experience any of the following symptoms: 

Computer Hangs if USB Selective Suspend Option of USB Mouse Is On 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 317673 - Your computer may stop responding (hang) during shutdown if the USB selective suspend option of your USB mouse is turned on

Computer Hangs When You Resume from Hibernation or Standby if Your Ultra Bay Has a UDMA Device 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 317087 - If the following conditions exist, your IBM ThinkPad laptop computer may stop responding (hang): You hot docked your IBM ThinkPad laptop computer to a docking station that has a UDMA-capable device (such as CD-ROM or DVD drive) in the ThinkPad Ultra bay; You placed your IBM ThinkPad laptop computer into Hibernation mode or Standby mode; or You resumed your IBM ThinkPad laptop computer from hibernation or standby.

Computer Stops Responding After It Restarts During Windows XP Setup 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 307551 - When you install Windows XP, your computer stops responding (hangs) at a black screen after Setup restarts the computer. You may also receive the following error message during the setup process:

Computer Stops Responding When You Install Windows XP on a Computer with an i815 Chip Set Motherboard 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 282195 - When you attempt to install Microsoft Windows XP on a computer that is based on the Intel i815 chip set and has a universal serial bus (USB) keyboard and mouse attached, you may experience the following behavior: 

Computer Stops Responding with a Black Screen When You Start Windows 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 314503 - When you attempt to start Windows XP, the computer may appear to stop responding (hang) with an empty, black screen immediately after the power-on self test (POST) is complete and before the Windows logo normally appears on the screen. 

Computer Stops Responding When Shim Code Has a Buffer Overrun 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 308035 - If the shim code has a buffer overrun, the computer may stop responding (hang) in the shim dll files in some scenarios. 

Msconfig.exe Stops Responding if User Is Not an Administrator 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 314448 - When you try to apply changes in the Msconfig.exe tool, Msconfig.exe may stop responding (hang). However, an administrator may be able to complete the same operation without any problems. 

Windows XP Stops Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 307274 - When you shut down your computer, Microsoft Windows XP may stop responding (hang) while the following message is displayed: 

Windows Explorer May Stop Responding When You Close a Window 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 315094 - When you close a Windows Explorer window, Windows Explorer may stop responding (hang). This problem may occur if all of the following conditions exist: 

Your Computer May Hang If You Unexpectedly Remove a PC Card Storage Device While the Computer Is in Standby 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 311822 - If you remove a PC Card storage device while the computer is in standby or hibernation, the My Computer window may be displayed in a black or white window, and the computer may stop responding (hang) when it resumes. This problem can occur with PC Card storage devices such as CompactFlash, Flash ATA card, and Memory Stick devices.

You Computer May Pause with a Black Screen If You Press ESC During Startup 
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 311799 - If you press the ESC key while your computer is starting, your computer may pause with a black screen. If this problem occurs, you can press any other key to resume the startup process
