2000 to Windows XP Upgrade Issues

Although
Microsoft support a direct upgrade to Windows XP from Windows
2000 or NT 4.0, the process has a few bugs of its own (but not
as many as an upgrade from Win9x) If you can, try to install
Windows XP as a fresh install instead of an upgrade. But if you
really need to retain all of your application settings, here's
what to look out for in the upgrade process.

Windows Upgrade Advisor Quits Abruptly During System Compatibility Check and No Report Appears
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 305883 - While you are upgrading your computer from Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to Windows XP Professional, when you
click Check System Compatibility , the Windows Upgrade
Advisor may quit abruptly. You do not receive any report about
system compatibility, and you also do not receive any notification
that Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 is required, even if no service
packs are currently installed.
You Receive a "Windows Setup Cannot Continue Without Service Pack 5 or Greater Installed" While Upgrading to Windows XP
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: 311775 - While you are upgrading
from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation to Windows XP
Professional, you may receive the following error message. If you
receive this error message, the upgrade process quits:
