BizTalk© is an industry initiative started by Microsoft (and supported by major vendors) that is designed to allow applications  to communicate with each other across a network or the web through data interchange standards based on XML. BizTalk Server is only one part of a larger puzzle that includes the BizTalk Framework and BizTalk Schema Library.
